Ranking Method of Job Evaluation
In this method, each job as a whole is compared with other jobs. After comparison, all jobs are arranged from the highest to the lowest in order to their importance as judged by duties, responsibilities, and demands on the jobholder.
It is also called a job comparison method.
Techniques used for ranking jobs-
- Job Description – The written job description is prepared for every job. Description is then studied and analyzed and differences are termed as duties, responsibilities, skill requirements, etc. are noted. Each job is assigned a rank depending upon its relative significance. Not possible in case of large number of jobs as rankers required to keep in mind all the jobs being ranked.
- Pair Comparison- Each job is paired with every other job in the series. The more difficult job in each pair is identified. Rank is then assigned on the basis of the number of times a job is rated more difficult.
- Ranking along a number line- Ranks obtained through the job description and paired comparison are spread along a number line. Each job is placed along the line on the basis of its closeness to the highest-ranked job.
